Unter Autopoiesis (Humberto Maturana 1974) wird der Prozess der Selbsterschaffung und -erhaltung eines Systems verstanden. In der Biologie z.B. bildet sie einen Ansatz, das charakteristische Organisationsmerkmal von Lebewesen oder lebenden Systemen mit den Mitteln der Systemtheorie zu definieren; so charakterisiert der Ansatz lebende Systeme als einen Prozess (konkret: als die Form der Organisation), der diese verwirklicht, anstatt sie über eine Aufzählung ihrer einzelnen Eigenschaften zu definieren.
